Alma de Leon, a judge, lawyer, lifelong learner, and creative spirit passed away today 4/7/2022. The Honorable de Leon was, until her retirement this past January, an Administrative Law Judge in the Office of Disability and Adjudication Review of the Social Security Administration. Born in 1950 in Puerto Rico, the Honorable de Leon graduated with a B.S. in Political Science in 1972 and a JD in 1979 from the University of Puerto Rico. Wasting no time, de Leon immediately entered a formidable life of public service. In 1994 she was appointed to the Social Security Administration and moved to Bethel Park, PA.
In Pittsburgh de Leon committed much of her free time to mentoring Latino professionals and was a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Association and was active in the Hispanic Bar Committee and the Minority Bar committee. She was a member of the Hispanic Affairs Council of the Office of Disability and Adjudication Review and Vice chair of the Hispanic Employment Program Committee of the Federal Executive Committee.
After retiring from the bench in December, Alma declared that she was ‘retired from the office but not from life’ and took on her retirement activities of learning and art with the same passion she approached the law. She always took the time to make handmade cards for friends and family for every occasion.
Alma joins her son Angel Fermin Miranda who passed away in June of 2007. She leaves her siblings Klaus, Fermin, and Maria, husband Angel Miranda, her son Victor Miranda, her step-children, Ivonne Miranda (Wendy Weiner) and Angel Miranda (Luiselly Miranda), her grandchildren, Angelito, Natalia, Sol, Lev, Elijah and Jon. Alma de Leon’s spirit, her distinct sense of social justice, her quick wit and infectious laughter will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
