Dr. H. Zane Kirk, 84, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024, in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
Born in Steubenville, Ohio, on May 14, 1939 to the late Henry and Elizabeth (Zane) Kirk, Zane was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, an avid tennis player, and an Eagle Scout. A 1956 graduate of Steubenville High School, he went on to graduate from Princeton University in 1960 and then earned his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. While in Houston, Texas, he married his wife, Sharon McClung on June 21, 1963. The two moved to Nebraska where Zane served in the United States Air Force at Offutt AFB as a base pediatrician until being discharged at the rank of Captain in 1969. Over the next fifty-four years he enjoyed practicing medicine in Omaha, Houston, Pittsburgh, and Indiana, PA.
As a doctor, Zane cared for hundreds of Pittsburgh families through his work at Allegheny General Hospital beginning in the early 1970s building what would become lifelong relationships he so cherished as he moved into private practice. Beginning in 1986, he took over as Medical Director of Student Health Services at Pechan Health Center for Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he continued until his retirement in 2008 at a position that afforded Zane the chance to grow professionally while continuing to have a positive impact on the lives of his, now older, patients. In retirement Zane pursued his love of reading and gardening, while enjoying his Corgis and his growing family who flourished under the attentions of their “Daddy Dr. Kirk.”
He is survived by his children, Daniel (Maity) Kirk, Cathryn Kirk, and Carlton Kirk and his four grandchildren, Kelli, Katie, Andy, and Nate.
A Memorial Service will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa 15206 at 10:30 am on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
