Dzidra Laima Berzins
Formerly of Scott Township, peacefully passed away on April 22, 2020, ten days shy of her 100th birthday. She was a resident of Genesis Bridgeville Rehab and Care Center, where for the last two years she had been well looked after by the caring people working there. Born in Latvia, she married the late Janis Vanags. Soon afterwards, she fled her home due to the Soviet invasion and World War II. She left with her father and two young sons, Intis (Mara) and Peteris (Sandy), who have preceded her in death. After eight difficult years, she made her way to the United States and married the late Valdemars Berzins. She eventually settled in Pittsburgh where she was active in the Latvian Lutheran Congregation, and participated in the Pittsburgh Folk Festival for many years. She loved her home and garden, her pets, the Steelers and her family. She is survived by her daughter Ieva (Don) Levkus, daughters in law Sandy Vanags and Mara Vanags, grandchildren Scott (Kristen) Vanags, Chris (Loren) Vanags, Liza (Allan) Walsh, Erik (Lisa) Vanags and nine great grandchildren. There will be a private viewing at Paul Henney Cremation & Funeral Tributes, Bethel Park and internment at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery to follow. A celebration of life will be held at a later date when it is safe to gather together. If desired, contributions may be made to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
