Joan M. Greenaway peacefully left to be with God on the morning of Sunday May 31, 2026. She had been recovering for over a year from a massive stroke. In the days and weeks leading up to her death she was lovingly surrounded by family, friends and surrogate family. She also received numerous phone calls, letters and cards from relatives and well-wishers. She left this world surrounded in love.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. of 59 years; her sons, Richard (the late Larry) and Mark E. (surviving his wife, Theresa). She is survived by her son, Kevin M. (Carol) and her daughter, Paula E. (Stan) Bikulege.
Proud grandma of Nicholas Pomposelli (Amy), Ryan Greenaway (Christy), Dana Hippensteel (Curtis) , Dina Kuhn (Brandon) , Kyle Greenaway (Vanessa) , Nolan Greenaway, Lauren Greenaway (Meg), Natalie Bikulege-Baum (John-Paul), Stanley Bikulege (Kate) and Luke Bikulege (Jamie); cherished great-grandma of Caleb Hippensteel, Caden Hippensteel, Anthony Pomposelli, Zoey Beck, Cowen Hippensteel, Conor Hippensteel, Francesca Pomposelli, Maria Pomposelli and Cameron Baum. Dear sister to the late Gilbert "Buzz" DeBor (Veronica), the late Robert DeBor (Linda), the late G. Paul DeBor (the late MaryJo), Linda DeBor, and the late Patricia DeBor. She was a beloved Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan was born to Mary and Gilbert DeBor and was the oldest of 6 children. She was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Upon completing classes at the Robert Morris School of business, Joan was employed by Equitable Gas Company where she met a best friend, Patricia (Enders) Greenaway. This eventually led to her meeting the love of her life, Patricia’s brother Paul. Together Paul and Joan raised 4 children in Bethel Park, PA. During that time Joan was very active in supporting her children’s activities, while continuing her passions of downhill skiing, bowling, plays & musicals, playing cards (especially bridge) and travelling – to name just a few. She was a parishioner at St Germaine for nearly 60 years where she also volunteered her time. She continued her career as an administrative assistant, working for the Bethel Park Municipality well into her 80’s! Eventually, she and Paul were able to build their own summer getaway place at Holiday Camplands – a place where every grandchild learned to fish, ride paddleboats, and go on golf cart rides.
Joan spent the last 5 years of her life in Greenville SC and was excited this year to say she was in her mind, officially a southerner. She embraced the move South as she did with everything in her life – with courage and faith that it would all work out.
When asking family & friends of their memories of Joan, there is a clear and common thread – she was a trusted shoulder to lean on, quite the conversationalist, supportive, kind and generous, faithful, sweet and spunky. She never knew a stranger, she loved a party especially if they were serving Cosmos or Manhattans, and if she knew you needed a place to have a home cooked meal, her door was always open – even to ½ the CMU football team. Above all, she loved her family and rarely missed an opportunity to celebrate and support them through life’s special moments. She absolutely loved family trips to any beach.
Friends will be received on Friday, June 12, from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Paul L. Henney Cremation & Funeral Tributes, 5570 Library Rd. Bethel Park. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, June 13, 10 am at Our Lady of Hope Parish/ St. Germaine Catholic Church, Bethel Park. Burial will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, perhaps consider a donation to your favorite charity in her memory or reach out to Paula for specific ones closer to Joan’s heart.
