Mary Ann Halas
September 10, 1921 to October 4, 2019
Mary Halas passed away peacefully at age 98 last Friday at Asbury Place in Mt. Lebanon, PA. She is survived by two daughters, Naomi J. Halas and spouse, Peter Nordlander; Barbara Halas Shimasaki and spouse Marshall Shimasaki; a grandson, Robert Shimasaki, as well as her nieces Mary Lou Oothoudt and spouse Mike; Joanne Monthey; and nephew, Roger Monthey and spouse Wanda. She will also be missed terribly by her devoted caregiver of many years, Maureen Nath, as well as the nurses and aides at Asbury Place where she always had a good word for everybody who helped her in her "golden years."
Her childhood was spent on a family farm, outside Weyerhauser in northern Wisconsin. After earning a teaching certification at the County Normal School, she taught in the local (one room) school. She enlisted in the United States Coast Guard at the start of World War II, which took her to Long Beach, California where she met the love of her life, Frank P. Halas.
When her children were older she completed her college degree, graduating with honors from the University of Pittsburgh. She went on to work for the U.S. Treasury Department for 30 years until her retirement.
She loved her family, nurturing her amazing vegetable garden, and spending summer vacations at Bass Lake, near Strickland, Wisconsin.
We sure will miss her.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 12th from 3-6 pm with a funeral service at 6 pm at Paul Henney Cremation & Funeral Tributes, 5570 Library Rd. Bethel Park, PA 15102
