Ruth Meyer Obituary

Ruth E. (McElfish) Meyer

Of Bethel Park, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Devoted mother of Sheri (Gary) Pollock and Erin (Rob) Pryke; loving grandmother of Rachel and Daniel Pollock, and Dorian and Lydia Pryke; sister of Patty Peterson and Cheryl (Tom) Danielson. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Naomi McElfish; her husband, George Meyer; and her grandson, Colton Pryke.

Ruth loved and studied all things nature, from insects, to gardening, to weather.  She was creative, crafty, and persistent, and could figure out how to make or fix just about anything.  Always a clever wordsmith, she loved writing, crossword puzzles, and a good game of Scrabble.  She was endlessly curious, fascinated by ancient Egypt, aliens, and most recently, her favorite YouTube animal rescue shows.

In her early years, Ruth worked as a compositor for Goodway Printing and enjoyed her contract work at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory.  Later, she was the secretary at Ruthfred Lutheran Church.

Although she spent some time working outside the home, Ruth dedicated most of her life to caregiving and volunteering.  She was a stay-at-home mom, actively volunteering in the elementary school PTO and as a Girl Scout leader.  She served for many years in the leadership of Camp Augustana, where she was affectionately known as “Mother Nature”.  She belonged to the Bethel Woman’s Club and the Ruth Circle at Ruthfred Lutheran Church.   In recent years, she enjoyed her personal mission of crocheting hundreds of lap blankets to donate to charity organizations.

Ruth was surrounded by loving and caring neighbors and enjoyed lifelong friendships through the Tidewood Mixed bowling league and monthly “Ladies’ Lunch” group.  She loved good and playful banter and time with friends and family.   Whether a holiday, a vacation with her sisters and the “Vacationing Babes”, or time at the lake with the whole family, she relished it all.  She especially loved any time spent with her grandchildren. She shared her passions with them and was their number one fan in all of their pursuits.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, September 24, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Paul Henney Cremation & Funeral Tributes, 5570 Library Road, Bethel Park, where funeral services will be held on Friday, September 25th at 11:00 a.m.
