Vasilios “Basil” Galanis
Vasilios born in April 1934, was from Stimanga, Greece, a region known for its grape growing mountains in the Peloponnese. He passed away at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
Vasilios is the son of the late Konstantinos and Maria Galanis; loving father of Maria (Christopher) Lamorey and Eleni (Brett) Lucido; grandfather of Georgia Lamorey, Makena and Nicholas Lucido. Survived by his loving siblings Efthymia Fronimadis of Montreal and Tasia Zarkos of Stimanga and their families and preceded in death by siblings Demetra Ladas and Panagiotis (Taki) Galanis.
Vasilios was a lifelong explorer. His journey began with a passion for soccer in Greece, where he was often recognized for his athletic abilities. In his early adult years, he moved to Montreal, Canada, to find work with his two sisters and brother. Vasilios eventually started a dynamic nightclub with his brother, Taki. Seeking warmer weather, he relocated to Las Vegas and joined the gaming industry. There, he spent decades sharing stories with his family about the many celebrities who came to know him as “the Greek.” Vasilios had the skills and memory of a great mathematician and always enjoyed playing games, especially cards and backgammon. He was also an avid fan of the Olympics.
Vasilios treasured his family and cherished the moments they shared. He adored his daughters and grandchildren and was always the first to start games in the backyard, where children and friends would gather. He loved nature, whether it was going to the mountains or spending time by the sea. An enthusiastic gardener, he could often be found in his backyard, watering the many fruit and fig trees he grew. He was a voracious reader and a keen student of history, with an incredible memory for Greek mythology. When he spoke, everyone would stop to listen to his thoughtful and experienced advice.
Vasilios brought a smile to everyone he met. His incredible insight, wisdom, and sharp wit added to his charisma. He made everyone feel special, seen, and loved. He was a kind, gentle, and generous man who made a significant impact on the lives of those who knew him, including his extended family of many nieces, nephews, and cousins who adored him dearly.
Although his physical presence may no longer grace our lives, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us, and his memory will be eternal.
Loving family will gather in remembrance of a life well lived at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at a later date.
