Cremation is a form of disposition selected by less than 30% of our families. Due to the smaller percentage of families who choose cremation, we have found that the majority are unaware of the options and find that after a quick review of the choices, 70% of cremation families choose to have some type of visitation/gathering/service to accompany this form of disposition.
As with any loss, one of the early stages of the grief cycle is denial. Actually seeing the person who has died allows people to accept the fact that a death has occurred. Often times, the few final hours prior to death are difficult and a persons’ appearance may be reflective of pain, agony and struggle. Seeing that loved one peacefully at rest can be comforting and more important, a step toward recovery.
We often hear people say “I told my wife/husband/children, just cremate me and that’s it. I don’t want all that fanfare”. Truth be known, this unselfish statement is meant by most, to spare the family grief, trauma, and money. In all actuality if you asked anyone who recently has experienced a death and had a visitation/gathering/service, they will acknowledge that “funerals are for those left behind”, as the deceased is now out of pain and hopefully in a much better place. This does not mean you need an elaborate or lengthy funeral. People need a safe/secure place to express their sympathy. Further, families more than anything need to experience this in order to make a healthy transition to living without their loved one while honoring them one last time.
